Bristol University Madrigal Ensemble 2024-2025
Tom Davidson, Conductor
Tom is currently a third year student studying Economics and Finance. He grew up in China where he learnt to play the violin and after moving to England he continued studying music at Guildhall in London. His favourite composer is Ravel, with his favourite work being Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit. Outside of music, Tom enjoys looking into anything tech-related and seeing any new inventions being released.
Meg Rees, Soprano
Meg is a third year Music PhD student, having completed her Undergraduate and Masters Degrees in Bristol. Meg’s love of music began at an early age through competing at local Eisteddfod’s and starting piano and violin lesson’s at the age of 7. Meg is a former girl chorister at St Davids Cathedral where she fell in love with choral singing, so much so that cathedral choirs form part of her academic research. Meg is a former member of the National Youth Choir of Wales, former choral scholar at All Saints Clifton and alongside MADS, currently sings with the Bristol University Singers. Meg feels incredibly lucky to be a member of a choir where lifelong friends are made through a shared love of choral music. When not singing or working on her dissertation you can find Meg boogieing to ABBA with a gin in hand!
Livy Naylor, Soprano
Livy is a third year Politics and International Relations student. Her passion for music has always been central to her life, being involved in school choirs and studying the violin and ballet from a young age. Her formal vocal training commenced at 16, leading to the achievement of an ARSM Performance Diploma in voice December 2021. She has been a consistent member of the Bristol University Singers, performing with the ensemble throughout her entire university tenure. She has also consistently sung with the Bath Camerata and The Rodolfus Choir, where she has been fortunate enough to be selected for solos. She has her sights set on continuing her vocal development at a conservatoire after completing her undergraduate degree. When she’s not singing, Livy can be found running Epigram, Bristol University’s newspaper, in the gym or boogieing to Tom Misch. She is super excited to be a part of MADs this year!
Lillie Preston, Soprano
Lillie is a second year physics student who has been singing in choirs since 9 years old, and has sung solos in venues such as St John’s Smith Square in London and Keeble College of Oxford, as well as with Dulwich College sessions orchestra. She has previously sung with University Singers, and has always loved singing in smaller groups, having been a part of Alleynian Blues and her school’s madrigal choir. Also being a violinist and having achieved her ARSM singing diploma, she was lucky to go on amazing tours as part of both choirs and orchestras to Italy, Spain, and Belgium. She can’t wait to see what amazing opportunities this year will bring!
Lucy Hancock, Soprano
Lucy is a second year Music with Innovation student from Bournemouth and she loves to sing! She is a Mezzo-soprano but sings Alto and Soprano in choirs and has achieved her Singing ARSM. She likes to sing all sorts of music but particularly opera! Lucy also plays the flute, piccolo and piano. She has performed in many concerts in both choirs and orchestras as well as solos, her favourite of which was singing Anyone Can Whistle in the Jazz Concert! She was also a member of the chorus for Dorset Opera this summer!Outside of music, Lucy also likes to bake and play lacrosse as well as walk her dog!
Daisy Dorsch, Alto, President
Daisy is a third-year geography student at the University of Bristol. She grew up in Cheshire, where she sung in school choirs and played in her country orchestra. She has involved herself in music from a young age: first learning the violin age 7, picking up the piano & voice shortly after. Alongside MADS she sings with Bristol University Singers and formerly as a choral scholar at All Saint’s Church. Daisy also conducts the Bristol Minerva Choir. When she’s not singing you can find her walking or swimming somewhere remote (or in the pub!)
Suzie Bach, Alto
Suzie is in her second year at Bristol studying music and Spanish joint-honours BA. Having been a part of chamber choir last year, she is really excited to be part of MADS and University Singers this year after hearing some of their previous concerts. She has always been musical, having played the violin from a young age and achieving her grade 8 in both violin and singing in secondary school – she now sings a few times a week with choirs as well as doing jazz singing as part of her music performance module. Suzie is really excited about the opportunities MADS will bring, including singing in Westminster Abbey and going on tour to Cornwall.
Lila Raczkevy-Eotvos, Alto
Lila has been singing in choirs for as long as she can remember! As a member of Taplow Girls’ and Youth Choir (directed by Gillian Dibden MBE), she sang evensong at St. George’s Chapel Windsor Castle, performed annually in Child Bereavement UK’s Christmas Concert at Holy Trinity Brompton and toured Tuscany. While studying abroad in Bordeaux, she sang for the city’s Chœur Voyageur, performing in various lovely French churches in the region. Lila is ecstatic to be returning to MADS for her final year at Bristol studying Law and French and is very much looking forward to singing lots of exciting new repertoire and exploring lots of exciting new Bristol pubs.
Eve Doyle, Alto
Eve Doyle is a third year music student at the University of Bristol. Having started singing in primary school she now works as a Lay Clerk at Bristol Cathedral. She has sung with The National Youth Chamber Choir of Great Britain, Scottish Opera’s Young Company and recently sang in the debut performance of the ‘Lady Clerks’ at the Three Choirs Festival. In her spare time she also plays the Clarsach. Ensemble singing is a passion of Eve’s and she hopes to have a consort of her own one day.
Ed Vaughan-Hughes, Tenor
Edward is in his third year at Bristol, studying philosophy. His background in music started when he began learning the violin at seven, but he soon developed a love of singing as well. Whilst in secondary school, he continued both disciplines, joining two orchestras and two choirs whilst taking both to ABRSM grade 8. He has performed in venues such as St Paul’s Catherdral and St John’s Smith Square and has a special affection for Handel’s Messiah after singing the solos of Comfort Ye and Ev’ry Valley. Whilst at university, Edward has focussed on his singing and has been a member of Chamber choir and University Singers. Outside of music, Edward enjoys playing and watching all sorts of sports and spending time in a pub.
Henry Murphy, Tenor
Henry is a second year student studying Politics and International Relations at the University of Bristol. He has sung in choirs from the age of 7, singing treble solos including ‘Walking in the Air’ from the Snowman at the Barbican and Once in Royal Davids City. He was a music scholar at school, singing in multiple choirs and playing the violin in the school orchestras. Henry was lucky enough to sing tenor solos in Faure’s requiem and Bach’s Magnificat both at Southwark Cathedral, also singing Duruflé’s requiem and Bach’s St Mathew passion. Alongside MADS, he sings with the Uni Chamber Choir and loves sport, playing football with both TUBES and Horror FC.
Tom Roberts, Tenor, Social Secretary
Tom is a second year music student at the University of Bristol. He has previously sung with Ex Cathedra Academy and in 2023 he became the first male scholar of the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain with whom he is still a member (despite not being a child anymore).
He was also a CBSO Youth Ambassador, working with the orchestra to plan and promote events with CBSO musicians and to help ensure orchestral music remains relevant and accessible to young people in Birmingham. Tom has many musical interests outside of choral singing as a jazz pianist, live sound engineer and music producer.
Patrick Minton, Baritone, Treasurer
Patrick is a second year medical student at the University of Bristol. Formerly the Head Chorister of the Trinity Boys Choir he has had the opportunity to sing in many amazing venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Opera House and Abbey Road Studios alongside touring China, Poland, Germany, Italy, and France singing music ranging from Tudor masses and Russian opera to Benjamin Britten and film soundtracks. Patrick has also been fortunate to sing choral services in many cathedrals including Ely, Wells & York Minster. He also sings with University Singers and is a keen jazz trombonist and pianist.
Wilkie Hoare, Baritone, Vice President
Originally from Kent, Wilkie is a third year maths student at the University of Bristol. He attended Tonbridge School with a music scholarship from age 13, having sung in the school’s Chapel Choir for 9 years. He was Head of School Music in the upper sixth, and has been lucky enough to sing on three choir tours, in venues including the Notre-Dame and St. Paul’s, London, where he took on the baritone solo from Ireland’s Greater Love. Wilkie is a bass-baritone with a DipABRSM in vocal performance and grade 8 in with a love for Baroque music. He also sings with the nearby semi-professional choir Bath Camerata and works as a choral scholar at Bristol Cathedral, depping also for Bath Abbey on occasion. Wilkie is very excited to be performing challenging repertoire with MADS and looks forward to this year.
Oliver Hames, Bass
Oliver is a second year Engineering Design student at the university of Bristol. Growing up in Leicester, he has spent the last twelve years as a member of St James the Greater church choir, as well as holding a choral scholarship with Leicester University Chamber Choir during Sixth-form and singing with Leicestershire Music service’s Show choir. In Bristol, alongside MADS, he also sings with the University Singers and as a Scholar at Bristol Cathedral. As part of these choirs, he has been fortunate enough to attend a variety of tours and sing in beautiful venues such as Ely, Norwich and Exeter cathedral, as well as Beverly Minster. Outside of singing, Oliver is a keen drumkit player and is (slowly!) getting the hang of bellringing. He cannot wait to spend this year singing with everyone in MADS!
Luca Hatwell, Bass
Luca is a third year student studying history at Bristol. His singing career began at the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace. He then became a chorister at Westminster Abbey for 5 years, leaving as Second Chorister, having sung at numerous royal and televised services, as well as touring the USA and singing for the Pope in the Vatican. During his time at the abbey, Luca performed as a soloist in numerous concerts, including Bach’s Passions, and Christmas Oratorio, and the Monteverdi Vespers. After leaving the Abbey, he attended St. John’s School Leatherhead with a music scholarship, singing in the chapel choir for five years. Alongside MADS, he also sings at Clifton Cathedral. He enjoys playing the Guitar and Piano, and in his spare time, he can be found in the pub or at Lakota.
Victor Hallam, Bass
Victor is a first year history student at the University of Bristol. From London, Victor sang with the London Youth Chamber Choir for two years, performing at a number of amazing venues including St Paul’s Cathedral, South Bank Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms. His favourite classical composer is Debussy, and favourite choral composer is Byrd. Outside of his choral music, Victor enjoys playing the electric guitar in a band, being lucky enough to perform at the well renowned 100 Club. His favourite bands include The Who and The Doors. Victor looks forward to joining the MADS bass section and taking on some fun and challenging repertoire this year.
